Rebecca Schubert and her husband Matt from Western Australia can’t wait to start a missional community in their Rockingham–Mandurah parish.

‘I see our missional community as a home space for our neighbours, for young and old families, for other adults – anyone’, Rebecca says.

She says we need to realise the gifts, skills and abilities God has given us, and then find the place that God is calling us to be a part of. Rebecca has come to know that she flourishes in areas as an introvert, whereas her husband, an extrovert, does not. Their differences are what makes them a great team. ‘Matt is great at the conversation and bringing people in, but I see my gift, as an introvert, is hospitality. I love cooking and creating a space where people can come in and feel comfortable.’

Rebecca envisions that their missional community will be more connected and continuous throughout the week, going beyond just seeing each other on Sunday. ‘It will be about doing life together and speaking Jesus into our everyday lives, rather than it just being a Sunday, say with our young adults group.’ She imagines doing daily things together like eating a meal or taking kids to the park.

‘It’s that safe place where you can really talk to each other about real stuff’, she says. ‘It gets messier, but it’s in those messy times that you can bring Jesus into it.’

What Rebecca is most looking forward to is seeing non-Christian people ‘figure out Jesus’.

‘I hope to be able to mould the culture we’re in for God’s good, not just because it’s a great idea that we’ve come up with, but because it actually draws people into a community and closer to God.’

‘We can only do that with the Spirit’s work.’
