Grow Ministries is the churchwide child, youth and family ministry department of the LCA/NZ.

One of the many ways Grow supports congregations is by visiting them. So when Downfall Creek Lutheran Church from the LCA/NZ’s South West Queensland Parish invited Rachel Schilling and Kristin Lucas from Grow Ministries to attend their annual parish weekend, they were keen to join them.

Rachel, Kristin and four of their children ventured out west, some 650 km from the Sunshine Coast.

Arriving on a Saturday for a community lunch, they were greeted by more than 30 people from the parish and the Dalby Ministry area. They enjoyed some biblical get-to-know-you games and Rachel guided the gathering through the Grow Ministries’ 10 Guiding Principles for effective child, youth and family ministry.

After afternoon tea and a billy boiling contest contrived when the electricity went out, Rachel and Kristin talked more about ways Grow can help congregations to develop an intergenerational culture. After dinner, Kristin led us in Godly Play, as all generations gathered to listen, reflect and share.

‘Since our time at Downfall Creek, continued support has enabled these congregations to form a Grow Coaching cluster in the Dalby/Chinchilla region, through which they will journey together to implement the guiding principles. What an exciting time they have ahead!’, says Rachel.

Grow Coaching congregations become communities which foster faith formation practices over a two-year journey of discovery, growth and supported learning.
